Country: Turkey Department: not specified Challenge: Cancer is an unseen condition. If you tell a teacher they may not understand the many ways this can affect your life. A student with cancer can have extra needs: S/he may need more time because - s/he misses classes and/or exams and need to catch up
- s/he is tired and finds it difficult to concentrate
- the stress of living with cancer distracts from the priorities of a 'normal' life
S/he may be more tired because - the treatment can be physiologically tiring
- there are extra journeys to hospital; this might be in a different town.
- getting to class can be tiring
S/he may have extra costs - s/he needs a clean environment ... so they cannot use common bathrooms/ kitchens
- s/he needs to be able to rest ... so they cannot stay in noisy dormitories
- s/he can't use public transport (standing up waiting or on a bus crowded bus is tiring). Taxis are better but cost more than public transport:
Solutions:
- Free campus-wide transport to travel between lessons/ buildings
- Quiet places to rest on campus
- Information to instructors and lecturers, so that absences are understood and exam alternatives can be arranged
