TIU4 - Day 4 Print E-mail

Thursday 2nd July, at Otel 2000

The morning session started the homework given at the end of Day 3.   Turkish counsellors and students met to discuss solutions for problems. This lasts for 30–45 minutes.

At the same time, the foreign students started working on the European Disabled Students Platform: they prepared a draft text so that on Friday morning the student group would directly be able to talk about forming the Student Platform (TIU5).  .

COFFEE BREAK

Before the training, the Turkish students had made a list of some problems that they face.  We talked about some solutions to these problems. There were two main areas of complaint:

  1. All disabled students mentioned negative attitudes of instructors.
    1. Student counsellors can help instructors to handle with this problem.
    2. Sometimes the director of the programme can invite all teachers and instructors and give information about disabilities. It is a kind of training session.
    3. Some students can also be invited to tell their problems to the instructors and teachers.
  2. All students with disabilities complained that some instructors/lecturers give extra points to disabled students  They want to be treated that same as all students.  They want the teachers to behave equally to all students.

LUNCH

'Planning the next year'  In the afternoon students and counsellors from the same university form separate groups.  In the first 20 minutes they brainstorm all the things that could / need to be done; some listed about 30 points.  In the last 10 minutes, the groups had to prioritise, and reduce the list to 2 or 3 points that can be done in the next year: realisable, in the right direction, guaranteed to bring some change - even if it is not as much as we want.

To decide which ideas to select, we thought not only about good practices and role models.  We also thought about

  • What needs to be done?
  • What resources does resources the university have?
  • Who are the people who want to help (not those who should help)?
  • What are we (the coordinator and students present) sure we can do?  What skills do we have?
  • Visibility is important: do people know abou the Disability Services?  How can more information be given, in different ways, in different areas?  Think of involving existing groups: library, health centre, student
