Call for Participation Print E-mail

Dear colleagues,

The TIU project began over a year ago.  In this time a lot of information has been collected (see Survey Outcomes ), and an International Forum has been set up to link Disability Advisers in Higher Education anywhere - for practical reasons,  there is one limitation: English.   Please contact us if you have difficulty because of English, we will look for solutions together.

The international Wordlist might help.

The original call for participation in the survey (March 2009)

We, as Mustafa Kemal University (Hatay, Turkey), Middle-East Technical University (Ankara, Turkey), and the Dutch Expert Centre for Studying with Disability in Higher Education (Utrecht, The Netherlands), are running a 16-month EU-funded project under the EU programme of Civil Society Dialogue between Turkey and the EU.

In this project, disabled university students and disability advisors from several European countries are discussing what works and what is needed. Together we will be identifying criteria and draft standards so that more disabled students can get to university and graduate successfully.

You can find more detailed information (objectives, target groups, action plan, outcomes) in the attached leaflet. This project started in July 2008 – its kick-off meeting took place in Hatay, Turkey, on the 25-26 September 2008 - and is due to end in October 2009.

We would like to invite you to be a member of an EU-wide network of advisors working closely with disabled university students. The idea is to interconnect as many people through internet, and then to enable them to exchange experiences and methods. This will help to progress towards harmonization of standards of management of Higher Education regarding disabled students among EU and candidate countries.

We are approaching you in the frame of the third activity of our project: “Creation of an online network of specialists supporting disabled students at university level”.  The first step is to gather information from as many international universities as possible to form a Data Base on Support for Disabled University Students across and beyond Europe (please fill in the Survey ).  People who answer the survey will then be invited to participate on an online Forum; this will allow everyone involved to ask for specific advice and to share experiences that can help others.

This network will develop between October 2008 and August 2009. The material gathered through the survey will be processed and made available on the website: www.tiu.org.tr. Active members of this network will be invited to participate at the sixth activity of the “Towards Inclusive Universities” project “Establishing common EU-level management standards to support disabled students at university” – which consists of an international workshop to be held in Hatay, Turkey, in October 2009.

We would appreciate if you could give us your details (name, surname, email, phone, institution, position and responsibilities).  Please forward this invitation to colleagues who may be interested.

I thank TIU associate member EAIE Special Interest Group on Disability Issues Worldwide for their role in this activity.

Looking forward to hearing from you soon,

Yours sincerely,

Claire ÖZEL
