Money abroad Print E-mail

When travelling abroad, the easiest is to use your bank card: you can get local money from any ATM bank machine with the right symbol.  VISA, MASTERCARD, MAESTRO, Cirrus, American Express, Plus, Union Pay can all be accessed in Turkey.  Simply  type in your regular 4 digit code,and select as you would at home...

  •  The machine will give you local money.
  •  The amount of money will be taken from your bank account in your home town;
  •  There is a small cost, but it is worth it because:
  1. You don't need to go to a bank
  2. You don't need to wonder which queue to join
  3. You don't need to talk with anyone

Only take out a small amount - you can always get more later.

Note:  If you are not sure your card will work abroad,                                                                                                     .   .   .   .   .bring some Euros: at the hotel you can exchange them easily Wink

When you come to Turkey for an EU project, 50TL is enough for a few days as the EU funds pay for food and hotel.  The airport bus costs 10TL (about 5 Euros) each way. With 100TL, you can buy small presents to take home. You will need more if you want to enjoy the night life, etc.

We will visit the old town of Ankara: Ulus. There are shops selling traditional crafts: jewelery, textiles, dried fruit-nuts, etc (make sure that you can take food/drink back to your country.  Otherwise your tasty presents can be taken by airport customs officers.)

Note: In January 2005, the Turkish Lira 'lost' 6 zeros. In December 2004, taking the bus to town cost 1 million TL.  The next week it cost 1New Turkish Lira (YTL).  In January 2009, the 'New' TL became simply a 'Turkish Lira' again.  But people on the bus still say 'Give me change from 5 million'!
